This yellow and black ribbon reflects the distinctive colors of school buses and also serves as a reminder of the yellow lines marking the center of the road.
The colors of this ribbon aim to communicate a simple and instantly recognizable message.
In the presence of a school bus, these three rules must be followed:
• Slow down and prepare to stop when the yellow flashing lights are activated.
• Stay alert as children are nearby.
• Come to a complete stop at least 5 meters from the bus when the red flashing lights are activated.
The Nathan Ribbon is an initiative of Groupe Autobus Maheux in memory of Nathan Macameau, a 13-year-old boy who lost his life in August 2024 after being struck by a car as he was getting off a school bus and was crossing the road. The goal of this project, supported by Nathan’s parents, is to ensure that school transportation stakeholders and the public adopt the Nathan Ribbon and that it becomes a strong symbol of school transportation safety in Quebec.
Nathan’s death is a painful reminder of how crucial it is for road users to follow these rules in order to protect the vulnerable children getting on and off school buses.
This yellow and black ribbon thus becomes not only a way to commemorate victims but also a call to action to prevent future tragedies.
